The road to citizenship

On Behalf of | May 16, 2022 | Immigration |

A foreign national or citizen can become eligible for citizenship through a process entitled naturalization.

Though there is a lengthy paperwork process to complete, an attorney makes it easier to navigate these requirements. Here is an overview of the path to citizenship.

Basic requirements

Naturalization involves several steps that take place once the individual lawfully enters the United States and acquires legal permanent residence. These additional elements are also required after a waiting period of either three or five years:

  • The applicant must be at least eighteen years of age.
  • The applicant must be able to speak, write, read and understand basic English and pass a citizenship exam.
  • The applicant must demonstrate strong moral character throughout the time spent residing in the United States.
  • Through performance in an interview, the applicant needs to show an attachment to the principle put forth in the nation’s Constitution, show a belief in representative democracy and commit to the Bill of Rights.

Oath of allegiance

The final step in achieving citizenship involves taking a pledge of allegiance to the United States. During this ceremony, the applicant renounces all other national allegiances and commits to obeying any obligations requiring the support of the Constitution or bearing arms on behalf of the nation. Once citizenship occurs, the individual receives privileges and rights such as voting, holding government positions, passing citizenship to children and obtaining a U.S. passport.

It can take some time before citizenship becomes a reality, given the requirements of the naturalization process. The end benefits of being a United States citizen make the process worth the wait.
